How much filament?

I'm wondering how much stuff you can print with say 2 kg of 1.75mm abs filament. When I look to order the filament, it just mentions the weight and it's very hard to judge how much I need to buy. I've looked all over but can't seem to find an answer. If it helps, try and respond by saying it can print x amount of complete reprap parts kits, if that makes sense.

I think ponoko charges by the filament volume you use.
So (theoretically -- I havent used them) you could upload a file to them, and reverse engineer from the price they quote.

This calculation generally undershoots the real amount, but ABS weighs 1.04grams per 1cm3 (actually ABS you are using will vary)
Most programs will tell you the length or weight the print will need before printing. For example I downloaded the UP! software, imported the 2x stages kit here:
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:23030

and I believe it said about 14cm3 ... I rounded up for support material, waste etc.. to 20g per print ... or roughly 50 of these per 1kg roll.

I think a full set of prusa parts takes close to 1kg, those are probably with 100% infill though.

I started with 3 1 pound coils of 3mm ABS and PLA. Used most of 1 lb calibrating. (I had a few mis-starts). Used the second playing around. About 5 fist sized objects and a ton thumb sized. I'd say 1lb lasts a week or two of experimenting for a couples hours a night.
