Rotozip or Laminate Trim Router for the spindle?
Has anyone built a Shapeoko (or is planning on building one) using a Rotozip or Laminate Trim Router for the spindle?
I have a rotozip and a trim router already was thinking I could use them for a CNC machine and was wondering if the Shapeoko would be a good fit. My concern would be with the weight (over 3 lbs) as it is heavier then a dermel.
Below are links to the rotozip and trim router I would be looking at using. The rotozip is variable speed (15,000 - 30,000 rpm )and the trim router is fixed speed (30,000rpm)

Thanks!

Rotozip or Laminate Trim Router for the spindle?
I just picked up the Dewalt D660 last week from amazon for about $55. It comes with both 1/8" and 1/4" collets.
My initial thought is *yes!* its going to work. I need to cut my new mounts so I can actuallt try it out though.
Right now I'm focusing on the dual drive system (bearing was delivered yesterday!), once that's done I'll put the machine back together and cut the new mounts.

The Dewalt dw660 looks very similar to the rotozip as far as weight and power is concerned. Look forward to hearing if it works!
Thanks!

I'm planning a build using the Ryobi ONE+ Cordless Speed Saw Rotary Cutter.
Power-wise it's equivalent to the rotozip. it's under 30$ in store @ Home Depot (packaged w/o batt), has a beefy bearing right behind the chuck, accepts 1/4" and 1/8" bits, and it's DC, so power supply/speed control integrate very nicely.
I'll let you know how it goes.

minorthreat,
What you you going to use for a powersupply? How much current does it use?

Hrm... I forgot about that. I have one at home I bought for woodworking a while back. Without the battery it's pretty light. Wire in power and you're all set. I was on here trying to find the model # of the B&D "dremel" that was posted and came across this.minorthreat wrote:I'm planning a build using the Ryobi ONE+ Cordless Speed Saw Rotary Cutter.

The more I think about it the more I think that would be an awesome tool for it. It's got a high rpm, very solid and the 1/4 bits are a huge plus. Add to it the fact it's DC makes it that much nicer.
No idea on its power draw, it runs off 18v batteries normally. Maybe I'll test it out tonight before buying a power supply.

I'll probably start by running it off the 24v rail, I've got a few h-bridges lying around so I might throw one in for speed/dir control. I'll check the current draw on ryobi tonight and post what I find out.calica wrote: What you you going to use for a powersupply? How much current does it use?
