That's the most lucid analysis of the relative merits of dual MakerSlide fastened together and OpenRail on 4040 extrusion that I remember reading on this board. In the end the real determining factor that affects rigity is the v-wheels. They will completely mask any difference between the two.

I just finished a Shapeoko 2 build which includes upgrades as it was built. The entire machine plus supporting computer and control panel is mounted on a heavy duty cart which can be easily relocated . The machine includes:
1. Basic Shapeoko 2 package with 250mm X axis and 800 mm Y axis
2. Z axis screw upgrade
3. NEMA 23 motors
4. Mitsumi T slot aluminum extrusion for holddowns
5. Cable tracks with connector-ized cables
6. AC outlet on gantry for spindle power
7. X,Y, and Z limit switches with opto-isolation circuit to eliminate false triggers
8. Switch controlled outlets for router and vacuum
9. Makita 0701c router with variable speed
10. LED light ring on router bottom holder-switch controlled
11. Dust skirt with vacuum exhaust
12. 12 VDC power for LED light and opto-isolators
13. All Power OFF button
14. Momentary grounding buttons for Reset, Feed Hold, and Resume Start
15. External USB plug for computer connection
16. Lenovo Thinkpad with parallel port for possible future upgrade
17. Dust hose supported by clothes iron cord spring holder
Here's the working area with control switches Top is hinged and electronics are located below with power and motor/limit connectors located on bottom. Arduino is skewed pending receipt of right angle USB cable-design error (duh!) Cannot upload any more pics so will continue in new post

When you wired an extension cord through your drag chain and added a receptacle to plug the spindle into did you use an especial sort of cord --- did you select something which was shielded?

Yes, did put a fairly heavy duty power cable (unshielded) through the cable and added a receptacle to a rigid plastic angle piece on top of the X gantry.
As you surmised, I also trimmed the Makita cable-cut it and added a new plug.

Just as a another "data point" I also run the power for the router through the drag chain with the stepper and limit switch wires and have not had any issues as of yet with it. So far no Gcode interference but still early in the game. I think the opto-isolator circuits for the limits made that issue go away.
