Thank you. It's a 445nm 9mm Nichia 2.5W that has been throttle back a little to about 2W max.

Perfect. I've been eying a 2W model for etching PCBs. Think it'll work well based off how your projects are turning out.

Did this one today using analog modulation and I attached the original for a comparison. It was done on Poplar.

That's Lena! The image is a crop from a Playboy centerfold from 1972, scanned in 1973.

Found the sweet spot in the settings on this one. The detail really came out sharp this time. The Z axis stepper really worked hard on that gravel road twisting the MA3 shaft encoder back and forth changing the intensity of the laser and running at 60IPM without loosing any steps. I used a min of Z0.000 and max Z-.0255 setting with analog modulation. The laser beam burn line width is .005", so I used a step-over of .006" and I engraved at a 45 degree angle. The Gcode file is 1,800,016 lines long and the engraving is 9" X 7.25" on Birch Ply.

This picture reminded me of how hard it is to get a response from anyone on this forum.
I used analog modulation on Poplar again with my Shapeoko 2 Laser Diode engraver.

i like the car but I think this picture is even better, visually.

I agree. I have to take each photo on a one by one basis for editing before generating the gcode. Gamma, contrast, brightness and how much to sharpen it. Feedrate also has a large part on how light or dark the engraving comes out based on what material I'm engraving on. The Mustang was done on Birch Ply (run faster) and the Stooges on Poplar (run a little slower). Also the starting power level where I zero the Z axis. I always use a Minimum depth of Z.0000" and a Maximum depth of Z-.0255" for the 8bit shading.

The size of the focal point is what brings out the detail and creates more burning power to engrave at a higher feedrate. I was able to get focal point down to .005" using a AR coated 3 element glass lens made for the 445nm laser diode. I used a .006" stepover in the settings, but engraved at a 45 degree angle so the burn lines are actually .0042" apart so they slightly overlap. This eliminates any lines showing up in the engraving.
