Thanks for sharing. I've read from several sources that those 445nm Nichia 9mm diodes make a pretty wide beam compared to the m140 or 405nm diodes. Is this not an issue or does the 3 element AR glass lens focus it well enough? From some of the images I've seen I'd almost think a cylinder/astigmat lens would be needed to reach a point.

We use a M140 with the same 3 element glass lens on our mini CNC router laser diode engraver build that is Mach3 controlled and we get the same .005" focal point as the 9mm Nichia on our Shapeoko 2. We also have two 9mm Nichia's with the same lenses focused to the same intersecting focal point on our Servo Mach3 controlled CNC router and it has a focal point of .005" also. It was a very tricky task focusing both those 9mm Nichia LD's, but we figured out a process. We can laser engrave photos with that machine on Birch Ply at a feedrate of 225IPM. It has a maximum output power of 4.5W.

We have not noticed any difference between the M140 and the 9mm Nichia's capable minimum focal size using the same AR coated 3 element glass lens. We determine the size by how wide a burn line it gives us. Changing the direction that we engraving does not seem to change this burn line width, so the rectangular beam from either 445nm Laser Diodes gets pretty darn close to being completely round when it's focused down to a .005" size. This may be an issue when using a single glass G2 lens though. We have not tried a 405nm.

Most of the people discussing these diodes in any detail seem to want them for a much different purpose, handheld pointers or firestarters. I appreciate the extra information. It is good to know readily available lenses can focus these things to such a small point.

Been awhile since posting any laser engravings done on our Shapeoko here, so I did this one today using PicEngrave Pro 5 to generate the gcode. It was done on Poplar.

As the inventor/developer of "Varied Intensity" Laser Diode photo engraving, I can ensure you, here are your best options for the Shapeoko 2 or 3 to laser engrave quality/detailed photos using a laser diode.

We have teamed up with J-TechPhotonics and will be adding one of there Safety Compliant laser kits to our Shapeoko 2 in the near future. There are some misconceptions that there laser kits can not engrave photos and that is absolutely not true. Here is one of there 3D printer kits engraving a photo using our PicLaser Lite software. It has the same driver as there Shapeoko kit with the TTL & PWM control

Keep an eye out here in the future for instructions how to make a J-Tech laser kit quick change using the spindle mount on the Shapeoko 2 and I will present examples of Photo engravings using there kit also. Adapting and adding a J-Tech laser kit to a Shapeoko 3 will not be that difficult either.

If you are a DIY maker and want to build your own laser photo engraving system for your Shapeoko, then our Laser Diode setup PDF gives you this information. The encoder setup shown on our Shapeoko 2 in our instructables has very precision 10bit modulation control and is only around $100 for all the components, not the $270 cost that has been totally fabricated. Beware of all deceptive claims to increase sales, including the Laser Diode's output Wattage when using the 3 element AR coated glass lens for fine detail photo engraving! The 8bit DAC we designed with schematic that is shown in our PDF can be built for a fraction of the cost then the encoder add on is. It takes the step and direction signals and outputs a 0-5v to an analog modulation laser diode driver like the Flexmod P3, which in turn varies the laser diode's intensity to engrave your photos with dot-less shades.

All the components shown in our PDF are open source hardware available for purchase already.

I have been testing an open source PWM grbl firmware on our Shapeoko and getting some pretty good results. This grbl has an easy way to switch from Z axis for spindle engraving and carving and then to Laser PWM control for our Varied Intensity photo engraving process. Just type in a $L0 command for spindle or a $L1 command for PWM laser control. This grbl uses Z0-Z255 commands for the PWM 8bit laser power control.

The connection is simple from the Arduino UNO. Pin 11 is for PWM out to a Flexmod P3 like our Shapeoko 2 has and that is shown in our Laser instruction PDF. Pin 12 still can be used for a relay to turn on & off the laser with M03/M05 commands.

Here is more information of Andy's Shapeoko laser photo engraver build on instructables. He uses our PicLaser Lite software to engrave photos which will generate the Gcode for his grbl also. http://www.instructables.com/id/CNC-Las ... ng-Shapeo/

We used a 90IPM feedrate and a Z10 min & Z255 max in PicEngrave Pro 5 with our Advanced "Gray Curve" & "Feed Rate Change" feature on this engraving.

There was 1,868,853 total X, Y, Z & F (Variable Feedrate) commands lines of gcode in the file and PicSender streamed it flawlessly to Andy's LaserMode grbl.

Here is the results.

Some woods are harder to burn then others based on the laser Diode's output wattage to get the subtle shades using our Varied Intensity photo engraving process. This one was done with Andy's LaserMode PWM grbl by TTL (Pulsing) the laser diode on Red Oak. The original image was Dithered Black & White first in our PicEngrave Pro image editor. The power was set at Min Z0 and Max Z255 and run at 75IPM.

This one came out allot better. Finally getting our PicEngrave Pro 5 settings fined tuned to bring out more detail. The piece of Poplar I used this time was a little too grainy though. This file was 1,736,739 lines long.

Hi Jeff,
I want to apologize for the 270 cost on the encode price I could not find hard details and on my post I did say about , when I researched it this is the price I came up with.
On my next update I will fix this.

Also I never said that the JTech lasers did not support photo engraving. What I did say was that without some type of modification there was no support for the analog signal needed to do photo engraving.

Sorry, for any miss understandings, I have nothing but respect for what you are doing.
