Re: 3D CAM Tool Poll
I'm confused. I see the survey has several respondents selecting MakerCAM. As a 3D CAM tool? MakerCAM only imports 2D SVG files. So how can you generate 3D gcode? Yes, you can do drill, pocket, and profile, but that's not what 3D means in this context, right?
So what am I missing?

Correct. MakerCAM is more of a 2.5D CAM tool, but since it's more than 2D, and since we didn't want to have a poll just for 2.5D tools, it got lumped in here.

Autodesk Fusion 360 is pretty powerful. It's geared for big milling machines, but you can use it for the workflow to gcode.

Replaced gCam which no one had voted for w/ Carbide Create (which has just had a new version announced via e-mail).

Im using NX9 to do all my CAD/CAM work since I have access to the tool from my works laptop (:AnonymousPerson wrote:Some people have access to high end software through their workHans wrote:NX10 is out, and it's good, though NX is way too expensive for anyone on a Shapeoko budget to actually buy.s24shane wrote:Using Cambam trial and Makercam now, about to try out NX 9's CAM software. Indeed is a very powerful tool and I think its kind of friendly (vs. CATIA). It has a steep and slow learning curve but once you get it is awesome. You can configure and customize about everything which makes it hard at first but you just need to be patient and play with all the options till you get what you want. You can see the machining animation and all the tool paths and see if your tool path is good and has a collision feature which is very handy.
NX CAM has some posts built-in but of course they are for the most popular industrial controllers (fanuc, Siemens, etc) so they are no good for our little S3 which is why I developed/coded a specific post that GRBL can handle. If you will be using NX for your work Ill gladly share it. (Just PM me your email address for the latest post since the one posted in this forum might be outdated)
