Shapeoko3 - Laser etching mod documented and posted

Post by apspurgeon » Tue Aug 11, 2015 8:24 am

Hi All

I've been busy getting laser etching set up on my ShapeOko3. The mod is fairly straight forward and allows for a variety of lasers to be attached (solid state lasers - not CO2) that do a great job of etching and cutting. This is based on a similar hack I did for my 3D printer.

The mod uses the unused PWN pins on the control board, some basic electronics / wiring, Inkscape and modified plugins and GRBL Controllers to send the GCode (see instructions).

I've posted it all online, with all the code and instructions and wiring/circuit diagrams.

Warning: If you don't use (all the time) safety glasses you will go blind, period.

Cool. Thanks for documenting the project. I've been wanting to put a laser on my Shapeoko.

Thanks for throwing this out for everyone! Really appreciate when bright, ambitious folks go the extra mile to document and share their findings with us laymen! :D

This just arrived. Works well cutting foam....Will be off cutting polystyrene this weekend.
it's a nice 31mm circular wand so easy to mount (why I chose it)....price is right too.

A nice profile cut with flow feed rate and single plunge to the depth of the foam should work.

I've got the parts and am getting ready to hook up the laser. Are you using the 24v pin in the 6-pin group on the control board?

I've got a 2w laser diode, will that pin be able to handle the current?

Thanks
Phil

Hi Phil

Yes, I'm taking 24v, PWM and GND from the same connector on the SO3 Board.
I'm using a 2W and not had any issues
