Question, How well is the Shapeoko at 3D Printing? rigidity etc (with acrylic, aluminium, mild steal etc )

Hi Blue,
Right now the 3D printing capability of Shapeoko is alpha stage.
We know it will work, but the specifics have yet to be ironed out. There is an example of someone on youtube running their machine from 3D printer electronics (RAMPS v1.4 perhaps?). But otherwise, there is no video. Yet.

But slightly confused, looking back at the images on the Shapeoko and inventables site, it looks as tho. Shapeoko has 2 dedicated stepper motors for X and Y and the dremel as a stationary Z? or is it 3 dedicated stepper motors for X,Y and Z, and the Dremel used to control the feed rate for cutting?
In terms to getting it to an open beta? what do you believe the time frame would be [to cut on all 3 axis]? also is it hardware or software that needs to be further developed? i imagine it being software issues, which need to be ironed out? [don't get me wrong, software development is nothing to scoff at.]

discard the stepper motor confusion... saw on the parts list, that shapeoko is a 3 stepper motor setup.

Printrbot and Shapeoko. For the past few years I've been pretty obsessed with 3D printing.

Would I be ignorant in thinking that the spindle could simply be replaced with an extruder in order to get 3D printing on a Shapeoko? Obviously, adding a hotbed and necessary electronics to drive the extruder, etc would go along with that, but as far as the mechanics go, would that be a correct assessment?

Actually, I was just thinking about this. It would be somewhat limited in Z axis prints, but it shouldn't take much to be able to wire one up to RAMPS and slap a extruder on and go.

could someone make a list of parts needed to convert the shapeoko cnc to a 3d printer?
at any point, is this viable to be in the S.O. wiki?
I was thinking that it would be great if the final user had the chance to print or cut on the shapeoko with a few changes in the machine!
