T-track spacing

Post by Ric » Wed Oct 23, 2019 1:10 am

I'm upgrading my Shapeoko 2 to 1000mmx1000mm. I decided to use T-track, and wonder what is the best spacing between them. On my old wasteboard, I have T-nuts spaced about 3" apart (I think), but I'm wondering if with T-track I could go 4" or even 6"?

Also, I'm trying to decide how to construct the wasteboard, and I have 2 ideas. The first would be to put down .5" MDF as the base, glue & screw the T-track on top of it, with .5" MDF in between the T-track (the T-track is .5" deep). Another option is to use my router to make .5" grooves in some .75" MDF, and place the T-track in it. If I go this second method, under the T-track the wasteboard will only be .25" thick, and I worry that might be too thin. Any thoughts about which of these options might be best?

Thanks.

Spacing on threaded holes or T-track should be slightly less than the reach of one clamp --- that way you can position stock anywhere and clamp along any edge.

The alternative is to use a ratio such as Phi, with the expectation that one can find some placement which will work.

I spaced my T-Track at 3" spacing. Seems to work pretty well.
