No, a high-quality steel alloy and formed into a shape which apparently requires a custom die --- the Precise bits folks felt that it wasn't financially feasible to make a custom collet for the Makita, so I'm especially pleased that it's available for such a low price.

Not fair however to directly compare price-wise w/ the Precise Bits collets since they're ER20 compatible and available in much higher precision grades --- which is not a knock on the Elaire collet --- people have measured extremely low runout on it, it just doesn't have the added functionality / convenience of an ER collet.

I think the Makita w/ the collet is in keeping (at the high end) with the ShapeOko philosophy on price and performance. The other Big Bang for the buck would be the Harbor Freight 1/4" trim Router I was using --- if I hadn't gotten the Makita I'd've gone w/ a Stew Mac brass adapter (instead of the steel one I have) and looked into making a custom collet for it (which I still think would be the hot ticket for the next iteration of the ShapeOko).

The initial custom order was made from Elaire Corporation. Since then, they've begun selling them, and they're currently in-stock: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/ ... ns#Collets

I also ordered one of these collets from Elaire. Shipping was fast, and the product works excellent!

I don't have a way to measure runout, but I appear to be getting better results than with the stock spindle. I am much more comfortable with long machine runs using the Makita router.

Peter,
For shure it's true
Makita rt0700 sold in EU with metric collet
for imperial sizes collet partnumber is 763637-1
metric version have another partnumber
You can insert imperial bit 1/4" in metric but for shure cannot get back without damage risk

Mine was waiting for me as well --- looks great! Guess I'll have to either decide to buy a Makita router, or buy a similar collet for my Harbor Freight Trim Router...

I believe you could also use the precision collets for the Carbide Compact Router sold here:

https://shop.carbide3d.com/collections/ ... 2551527485

From what I understand the Makita and Carbide use the same collet. Hopefully someone else can verify.

Not sure if these are made by Elaire for Carbide 3D or by someone else but in the pictures they look nearly identical.
