Extend Wiring on SO3

Postby allenc » Mon Sep 03, 2018 5:02 am

Hi,
I'm building an enclosure and wish to move the control board to the outside of the enclosure.

First I am building an enclosure sized for the XL, an upgrade I will purchase later.

I have no wiring experience and need advise--what wiring type/gauge, connectors, and anything else you think I might need. I have soldering iron, flux, wire cutters.

Thanks,

Allen

Thank you, Will. I looked over the notes regarding cable wiring and came away confused.
Thee notes assume more understanding regarding things electrical than I possess. Does Carbide 3D sell wiring that I can purchase?

Best regards,

All you need to do is buy:

- Wire: 18 or 20 gauge. 4 (or more) conductor 18 gauge security cable is sold in bulk by the foot at most hardware stores, e.g., Home Depot's 18-4 CL3R Security Cbl Shld 1' @ 0.63, Part number 0000-249-865 Ed0345.18.10 <A>: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Cerrowire-50 ... 202206435#

- connectors: https://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php ... Connectors

Molex KK-series .100" pitch 2-pin headers[89] mating shell: http://www.digikey.com/product-search/e ... vendor=900
associated contact: http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/e ... 4-ND/26475
6 pin connector: http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/e ... -ND/171995 [90]
12 pin: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Mol ... cRag%3D%3D [91]
crimp pins: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Mol ... 5Zeg%3D%3D [92]

(you'll want 4 pin connectors)

You'll also want the terminal pins (available from Digikey) and a crimping tool: https://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php ... onal_Tools https://www.pololu.com/product/1928 (Digikey should have something suitable as well) as well as a suitable tool for cutting and stripping the wires.

If the above doesn't seem feasible, work out the lengths you need and let us know at support@carbide3d.com and we'll see if we can work up a custom invoice for wires in a custom length --- if you don't need too much length, I'm sure we could send you a set of the longest XXL wires.

Will,

I am very grateful that you would take so much time to help me out. With the information you gave, I should be able to make the cables.

I continue to be impressed by the level of support that you and the C3D staff provide.

i did the same thing you're talking about with this - 18 AWG 4 core stepper cable:

I didn't like having the extension plugs (i have an XXL) so I cut the cable right at the stepper and changed the whole lot for new cable :D

Yeah, I've not been wild about the whole wiring / extension situation. If I'd been asked, my inclination would've been for motors with connectors, and cables which reached all the way from controller to motor, with no connectors in the drag chains.

If I ever get a project which needs stepper motors, making that change is high on my list.

Thank you for the link. I think I'll do what you suggest and bypass connectors. I just need to get in gear and finish my enclosure.
